“By 2050, our oceans will carry more plastic than fish and an estimated 99% of seabirds will have ingested plastic” (UNenvironment.org)
The war on plastic has become a crisis, and with the beauty industry being one of the biggest contributors to the problem – think of all those cotton pads and single-use wipes and sheet masks – we can no longer simply sit by and watch our beloved planet be destroyed.
While some plastics might be obvious, like the afore-mentioned wipes and pads, other popular beauty products are contaminating our planet at an alarming rate.
Here are some easy switches you can make to reduce your carbon footprint and enhance your bathroom cabinet:
Plastic toothbrush ↔ Bamboo toothbrush
Single-use wipes ↔ Reusable cloth
Liquid Soaps ↔ Bars of Soap
Plastic Cotton Buds ↔ Bamboo Cotton Buds
Plastic Hairbrush ↔ PCR or Bamboo Hairbrush
Some personal care products are currently tricky to house in non-plastic packaging, such as shampoos and conditioners. But with an estimate of up to 552 million shampoo bottles ending up in landfill yearly, another solution has to be considered.
We at FFØR are always thinking about how our sustainable fundamentals of ‘reduce, re-use and recycle’ can be built into ours, and our customers, daily routines. Currently, all FFØR’s bottles are made with up to 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials. While this option isn’t plastic-free, it’s infinitely better for the environment. This is because PCR, which stands for Post-Consumer Recycled Plastic) packaging minimises or replaces the use of virgin (new) materials and is able to be recycled again after use. The benefits don’t stop there either – because PCR has already been processed originally from a fossil fuel to plastic, the reuse of that plastic into a new PCR bottle doesn’t require any further depletion of new fossil fuels, providing a closed loop packaging solution. We are looking at ways to be even more sustainable, and eventually hope to use only recycled materials in all of our packaging.
We’d love to hear about any swaps you’re making for Plastic Free Beauty Day!
