Dylan McConnachie is an award-winning hair stylist and colourist, master of balayage, creative avant-garde worker and FFØR’s Brand Ambassador. We checked in with Dylan to learn more about his journey to becoming the seasoned stylist and colourist he is today and how he champions FFØR’s ethical values when he’s in the salon.
Where did your hairdressing journey begin?
My career began at seanhanna in Bristol. At the age of 15 I started my apprenticeship, and by the time I was 16 I had already qualified. Year after year, I built up my clientele and worked up the ranks from Stylist to Artistic Colour Director. I’ve worked all over the UK including London, Ireland and Scotland, with a brief time working in Australia too.
What drives your passion for hair?
I love how hair can evolve and constantly be changed – almost anything can be achieved. Hair is limitless when it comes to colour, especially when working in the avant-garde space.
What do you most love about the FFØR product line and what are you excited about for the brand’s future?
FFØR is a brand that really speaks to me. Never in all the years I’ve been a hairdresser have I EVER used a product range where the results have been revolutionary. Vegan, sulphate and paraben free products are definitely what clients are asking for, but they’re also asking for cleansing and conditioning factors, and FFØR delivers all of that.
I'm so excited about the launch of FFØR Hair Colour! As a colourist, I’m very particular with what I use to colour, because of the condition implications, longevity, smell and cosmetic feel. FFØR Hair Colour contains a beautiful blend of grape seed and Brazil nut oil. The smell is divine and the condition is silk to the touch, with great white hair coverage. If you aren’t already using it, you need to be!
What about FFOR’s values speak to you?
Definitely the values the brand holds. Also, a big selling point for me is the smell. It just smells incredible. After trialing the products on myself and a whole array of clients, I have felt an immediate result on the hair, which is exactly what clients want.
How have you celebrated your many award nominations and wins?
Normally I would be at the salon or an awards ceremony in London. But the pandemic has caused an interesting set-up for nominations and wins, with Zoom calls being the norm. Last year I was a finalist in some HUGE awards including the British Hairdressing Buisness Awards for Social Stylist of The Year, Colour World People’s Choice Award, AHS International Visionary Award Avant Garde, The Big One Trophy and many more. That’s just 2020. But at the end the year I won at the Salon Awards London Region for Creative Image of The Year 2020!
What do you love to do outside of hair?
I adore going to see my family, especially my little sister Delilah. But in all honesty, I am ALWAYS doing something hair related or working on a project.
Tell us a story that helped shape who you are today?
I think from a very young age I always had an artistic flair and expressive personality that took time to flourish. But once that moment happened, it was just the beginning. I’ve always been a very resilient person and never had the fear of being true to myself. If I have a goal, I’ll work above and beyond to achieve that goal.
How do you unwind and relax?
I don’t! I never have time. My way of unwinding is going through past work and reflecting on what I’m going to do for the year ahead. I think any hairdresser would agree there is nothing better than finishing a long day with a glass of wine. Or if you’re me, a cocktail, especially a bramble!
What’s next for Dylan McConnachie?
My ultimate goal is to win at the British Hairdressing Awards for Avant Garde Hairdresser of The Year and enter the BHA Hall of Fame, all the while continuing to create brilliant hair.
